I say strip the decals off the helmets of every football team in the country (college & pro) for this week's games only. This week should be a week of commemoration and after that we absolutely move on. Business as usual for the nation. The CIA, the FBI, and the military will take care of finding the faceless cowards who perpetrated these spineless acts. I'm having a big problem with the media over this whole deal. They continually talk about how America will be changed forever because of these events. That's exactly what the cowards who did this want to here. That makes it a victory for them. I've been very pleased with George W. Bush's comments thus far, but I wish he would have said something to the effect of - "The only thing about America that will be different as a result of this is that we will be more secure in the future; however the difference you will see in the parts of the world that harbor these type of criminals will be tremendous, painful, economically devastating, and forever lasting. The people who perpetrated this foolish act will be brought to death and it should be known that they have done nothing to help their so-called 'cause', but rather have brought the direct wrath of the mightiest nation this world has ever known directly upon themselves, their families, and their people. The only thing they can do now is to come forth and spare their people unimaginable suffering. I'm calling you out, cowards." Now that would make for a speech to be remembered. Of course, a sitting president would never talk like this (even though they should) and the scum who did this wouldn't come forth of their own volition, but it sure would get my blood pumping and scare the crap out of some people on the other side of the world. Anyway, my point is that we can not let them see that our lives have changed even one iota. And that includes the games on this very Saturday. It is my opinion that, at this point, the symbolism involved with playing the games would transcend the symbolism involved with not playing them.

I think because of the seriousness of this, no amount of "see, we're really not being affected because we're playing football" will convice terrorists that we are not, in fact, completed devasated by this horror. This is why I think the game(s) should be postponed. JMHO

Unless the only thing you fear is God himself, then you live it to the fullest, which means playing football. Pray our leaders see they are the instruments God uses to administer justice in these circumstances, swiftly and thoroughly. For the rest of us PLAY ON...with NO fear, no intimidation from outside influence. Grieve, take a moment of silence and pray, but PLAY ON.

It could take our minds off this disaster and get our lives back to normal. I say play the game, find the bastard that ordered this, and let him meet his maker. I bet that Iowa won't play this weekend because we want to appear to be as compationate as the other colleges that cancel.

But yesterday I couldn't focus at all on work, nor can I today. Too wrapped up in the events and waiting to hear any breaking news. I know the football team did not practice yesterday. Will they today? If they do, can they give it their all? I don't know the answer, just asking the question. I think a little grieving time IS important. These are 18-21 year old kids. Who knows what is going through their minds. Can they focus on an opponent right now? Wouldn't we see a better game if it was played on Nov. 24th? I can certainly see both sides of thi sissue, whereas yesterday I could not. Why not wait to play?

However, with the airports remaining closed and the problems with air flight that will occur once they are reopened, I am not sure that logistically it can be done. If the majority of the games on Saturday need to be postponed, then I would like to see all games postponed in an act of solidarity and unity. GO HAWKS!!!!

It is no longer about pride and showing that we are strong and can not be broken or changed. It is about the safety of the United State citizens. When we strike, and yes, we will strike very soon, do none of you expect retaliation? I see yesterday not only as an act of terrorism, but also as an act of war. Osama bin Laden has people in every major city in the US just waiting for the call. If you do not believe this you are very naive. We are at war (although not officially declared) and we know that our soil is not as safe as originally thought. Do we seriously want to gather a large number of people at specific sites at specific times? If we strike against the enemy this week, what is to stop them from striking back this weekend? I, for one, do not think we have seen the end of the terroism in the near and immediate future. Osama bin Laden fuels his hatred with revenge. We need to be wary of the enemy we are up against. They are on our soil. HS

To not play sends a signal to these animals that they can bring America to its knees by acts of terrorism, if they believe they can now, they will do it again(altho tragically two oceans on either side of our great Republic no longer protect us from terrorism!)--something that Israel lives with 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

To say, as some have, that security and safety is concern is true but what about the security and safety the following weeks. IF having large crowds at the events is the problem then we perhaps should cancel the whole season and then what do we do with basketball, hockey etc. We are a nation that doesn't back down and I don't think we should start now.

The questioning will happen for a long time. But continuing on is not a question. It happens. The sun came up this morning, and (God willing) it will come up tomorrow. You don't heal from things like this, because scars will always remain. Spend a moment talking to someone alive during Pearl Harbor, and those scars are only too visible. Those scars and wounds always remain. Healing happens to some extent, but for the remainder of your life when you least expect it something comes back to bring that event back into your mind. Mourning for those lost and for an attack on innocence is a personal thing. You have to take the time and the means for yourself. But things are going to move on. You have to be a survivor and live life. Football is a game. A game for children. A game that I enjoy, especially when I can watch the Hawkeyes play. If this was the only game being played in the country I would have no guilt about going. Not many things make me feel better than tailgating with my parents before and after, and watching the Hawks. Whether or not we play any games tonight or tomorrow will have any effect on what has happened. Nothing can change that. The world fifty years from now is not going to look back and care all that much about a child's game played in Ames, IA the weekend after one of the greatest tragedies in our countries' history. Right now, though.....I need to feel something else. To have something to scream about. To cheer for. To hope for. I want to be able to play again. To have something else to talk about. It helps me and I know that it might help some of you. I think that is why we should play.

I am under the belief that Osama bin Laden has hundreds, if not thousands ready to commit the same if not similar acts of terrorism at his command. And, they are on American soil, scattered in cities around this great nation. It is highly likely that we will strike very soon. I have also heard that it is likely the terrorism is not over. I am just a little scared of putting that many people, in specified locations, at specified times, throughout the country. I for one, as a fan, am not so sure I feel comfortable in such a vunerable position. HS

I don't buy into the theory that playing GAMES this weekend makes a statement to the cowards responsible for yesterday's tragedies. An argument could be made that by continuing "business as usual" we are sending the wrong message. I'll not go into politics and morality discussions here. It's just my feeling that out of respect for all that has--and still IS taking place--our stadiums and arenas should not be filled with cheering and screaming fans this weekend. Also, the point could be made that a large number of the participants in this weekends games will be distracted (some possibly to a very large degree). IMO, it will be extremely difficult for many of the players and coaches to be focused on the task at hand. Let's put things in perspective and give it some time.

This tells me that the Amercan skys continue to be unsafe. What has happened this week has changed the way we think and live forever. You you refuse to believe this, then you obviously think and feel differently than me and my family. I guess we should play some football. These bastards have instilled fear and terror into the hearts of America. Like it or not. Believe it or not. Yes, life will return to normal eventually, but not very soon. Yes, we need to get on with our lives, and we are. There are certain parts of our lives, entertainment for one, which we need to be put on hold. Is the NFL wrong? Is the PGA wrong? Is NASCAR wrong? Is college football wrong?The answer is no. We are only 2 days removed from this act of war on American soil. Are you ready to board a plane and fly across country today? I guarantee you there is no way in hell I, or my family let's me get on a plane anytime in the near future. I guess we should play some football. I envy you as you live your life with no fear. I am human and it is human nature to feel these emotions. No, I do not think the threat of terroism will ever end. And no, I don't think we will have to live our lives in fear. But I do think we need to be real about this and understand what is happening around us. These "bastards" remain a threat to our democracy more today, than they did on Monday (when we lived our normal lives). They crossed the line. They killed innocent people in such a way that we are still in disbelief. We are sick to our stomaches at the gutless, lack of respect for human life, these bastards have. I can not help but believe, until I am proven wrong, that these people will strike again. As I stated above, THEY TRIED IT AGAIN TODAY. I guess we should play some football. I understand that you, we don't want to or refuse to live in fear. But guess what, there are a lot of scared people out there. Scared and angry. Angry at the horrible act of war against our country. Scared because we have all seen innocent, unsuspecting victim's lives tragically end. I don't think either of those emotions will go away soon. No matter how brave we all act. There is no reason to out playing football. HS
